Healthcare For All
Train a rural community nurse for one year in Rajshahi, Bangladesh
Rajshahi is a city in north-western Bangladesh, situated on the river Padma. Unemployment among young people here is high. The Church of Bangladesh has a nursing institute in Rajshahi, in the diocese of Kushtia. The nursing institute gives training to young men and women who are from Santal, Urao and Garo tribal communities.
The institute trains individuals to become nurses, thus providing them with an opportunity to pursue a career in healthcare. Qualified nurses go on to find work in clinics and hospitals, and often they are motivated to serve in rural communities, where healthcare is scarce.
Mosquito net
It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to contract malaria. Using mosquito nets can significantly reduce the risk of being bitten. Your gift could help the Church of Myanmar deliver mosquito nets to people living in remote areas, where there are no hospitals or specialist doctors and a high risk of infection.
Immunise a health worker
Hepatitis B is a major health problem worldwide with approximately two billion people infected. It is particularly hazardous for those who come into contact with large numbers of people, such as healthcare workers, the police and the emergency services. Only a tiny amount of blood or bodily fluid is needed to transmit the virus. Your gift could help immunise a member of the front-line staff at St Anne’s Hospital in Nkhotakota, Malawi.
Herbal remedies
Natural remedies can provide effective results for common health problems. They are also more affordable than conventional medicine, which is a particular advantage in countries like Brazil, where healthcare is privatised and out of the reach of impoverished rural communities. Your gift could help the Diocese of Pelotas, in Brazil, provide pastoral care and herbal remedies for local communities.
Two slab latrines
Whoever thought that toilets could save lives? A slab latrine means much more than just a hole in the ground. Your gift could help provide two families in Bangladesh with a clean and hygienic space, which will help prevent the spread of fatal diarrhoeal diseases.
Eye treatment for the elderly
Among the elderly of Bangladesh, cataracts often go untreated because healthcare is not easily affordable or accessible. Your gift could help ensure that two older people receive the treatment they need to restore their sight and change their lives.
Infection prevention kit
Your gift could help provide mission hospitals and clinics in Malawi and Tanzania with the tools they need – syringes, gloves, needles, aprons and disinfectant – to help prevent the spread of infection and subsequently protect frontline health workers, their patients and communities at large. By helping to prevent the spread of infection these essential tools literally save lives.
Help at birth
St James’ Hospital is offering medical outreach to the people of Mantšonyane, high in the mountains of Lesotho. Due to the remoteness of local communities, St James’ offers a vital service, especially for pregnant women who are encouraged to stay at the hospital as their delivery time approaches. Your donation could help to pay for birth assistance, giving both newborn babies and mothers the care they need.
